Andrew Ryan, Executive Director
ABOUT THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Andrew J. Ryan is the Executive Director of Hip-Hop Matters, a non-profit whose mission is to energize, motivate, empower, and support the youth of America through responsible use of Hip-Hop culture. Ryan has been teaching courses on Hip-Hop at the university level since 2001. Ryan spent over 10 years in industry working on Wall St with Chase Manhattan Bank in their technology unit to research stints with Boeing, IBM, Lockheed Martin, the FAA and NASA. Raised in the Bronx, Hip-Hop has always been around Ryan, especially the need to integrate Hip-Hop into urban education.

Professor Ryan has worked with youth since the age of 16 when he founded a youth group in his church in the Bronx, where he also taught Sunday school. He is a two time president of the Binghamton University Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and a two time recipient for Research Paper of the Year (Science/Math) from the National Black Graduate Student Association. Ryan is proud alumnus of Blessed Sacrament School, Fordham Prep and the Science and Technology Entrance Program, all educational institutions in the Bronx New York.

In addition to teaching at the University of the District of Columbia and George Mason University, Ryan is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Hip-Hop – a scholarly journal on Hip-Hop. He holds a bachelors degree in computer science, a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering and expects to finish his PhD in Public Policy in 2008. Ryan currently teaches Math (geometry and algebra) at the Thurgood Marshall Academy in SE Washington DC.

Akil E. Kennedy, Executive Editor
Akil E. Kennedy is the Educational Coordinator for Hip-Hop Matters and Executive Editor of the Journal of Hip-Hop. Half Dominican and half-Black, Kennedy was born and raised in the Bronx, New York.

He graduated from the prestigious Bronx High School of Science and attended Hampton University on a full-academic scholarship. At Hampton, he served as the Sports Editor of the Hampton Script and won numerous awards for his writing including the Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals Award for “Best College Print Commentary”.

Kennedy currently teaches history at the Thurgood Marshall Academy in SE Washington DC. For the past three years Kennedy taught at Adlai E. Stevenson H.S. and the Gateway School of Environmental Research and Technology, both in the Bronx, NY. Kennedy received his Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the City College of New York in June 2005.

Jeff Tate, Managing Editor

Jeff, born of Belizean and Jamaican heritage, is a native of Chicago, iII. Jeff's passion for helping urban youth began in part as a highschool athelete. Throughout highschool he was an all-state standout athlete in track and football. Jeff took his second passion, baseball, and began working as a youth counselor with the Fields of Dreams program in Washington DC, as baseball coach and education instructor. Current, Mr. Tate is currently pursuing degree in recording engineering and serves as the Managing Editor of The Journal of Hip-Hop.

Deliya Ryan , Editor at large

A graduate of Montreal's McGill University in 2002 with a degree in Anatomy and Cellular Biology, Deliya continued her education at the George Washington University, earning her Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology. Noteably, her research in the racial disparities in breast cancer survival revealed data which currently supports the findings of other studies in the field suggesting a concerning difference in the treatment and survival of African American women with breast cancer as compared to their Caucasian counterparts.

In 2004, she received a fellowship through the National Cancer Institute and the George Washington University where she is currently working on her PhD in Cancer Epidemiology. She is currently employed in Public Health program development and program management in medical education. Prior to this role, she gained experience in foodborne-illness outbreak epidemiology at a DC-based non-profit organization.

Deliya currently serves as the Editor at Large for the Journal of Hip-Hop.

Jennifer Manigross , Manager of Business Operations

Jennifer is a gratuate of from George Mason University in 2003 (BS, Marketing) and is currently enrolled in the Professional Masters of Business Administration program at the University of Massachusetts. She has extensive experience with project management, business development strategies, marketing communications, public relations, meeting planning, tradeshows and sales and maintains knowledge of accounting and financing principles. Jennifer is currently employed by a non-profit, membership based, association and is responsible for overall marketing efforts and member and customer relations.

Jennifer is currently the Mgr of Business Operations for the Journal of Hip-Hop.

Fritz Doseau, Art Director

Haitian born and Brooklyn reared, is an aficionado of Fine art, comic art, and graffiti. This self-taught, up and coming New York artist strive to find his place in the art world. Fritz includes illustrator Norman Rockwell, and comic artist John Buscema among his influences.

Aniekan Udofia, Illustrator

Born in Lagos, Nigeria and currently resides in Washington DC. His artwork focuses on Hip-Hop and can be found in Vibe, XXL and Frank 151. Aniekan’s artwork has been legally muralized on several walls throughout Washington DC.

Aniekan is currently serving as lead Illustrator with the Journal of Hip-Hop.

Lydia McCoy , Copy Editor

Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Lydia is a graduate of Little Rock Central High School. Lydia received here B.A. in Journalism from Hampton University (2002) where she was also Editor-In-Chief of The Hampton Script. Upon graduation Lydia entered the University of Maryland and received her M.A. in Public Affairs Reporting in 2003. She is currently the Social Services reporter for the Evansville Courier & Press in Evansville, IN.
